Behind The Scenes

There will be things moving around and nameservers pointing here and there over the next couple of days. If all goes well, you won’t notice.

Update: All done! I did have a little downtime during the Wordpress Database move and upgrade, but overall a big success. The feeds seem to be okay now as well.

Great to see that you’re moving to DreamHost!

I don’t know why but I don’t trust Dreamhost, for some reason I have the strong sensation that they oversell and that’s not a good practice in the web hosting industry!

Great! I hope that means you’ll get time to work on the LightBox gallery….we’re still waiting :)

re: #5 codecraig

whaddaya mean we? I’m using a perfectly good working gallery version, a hybrid slidebox/ lightbox update, with a couple of edits to tweak it. I can’t imagine what bells and whistles I’d wanna add. Only thing is, slidebox depends on loading prototype.js also. I see no downside to that.

First of all, use “777″ with Dreamhost and get 1 year for 9$. It worked a week ago.

Second, I would REALLY suggest that you read more about Dreamhost. And no, not from those who provide their referral links. Google “dreamhost sucks” and read what some people have to say, then go DMH’s stats page to see how frequently they had problems and what they were. Also, try contacting their support and see how fast they reply. My record is 15 hours :)

Numerous people are moving away from Dreamhost to providers with “live” support and virtually 0 downtime.

Yes, one of my domains is hosted with DMH and I am OK with the admin. panel not working sometimes, awful random speed drops and ever slower support. It was worth the 9$ that I paid for a year to see how it compares with my other hosting provider where my mission-critical sites have been located for the past 3 year. Not to speak badly of DMH, but they are far, far from being as good as “people say they are”.

Just my 2% of a dollar.

dreamhost = meh, i’m on it. probably be off in a month or so.

Of course dream host oversells… lets do the math:

8 bucks a month for 20 GB of storage…. Yeah… right… if you have an 120 gig drive you can host 6 people on a server (if you don’t oversell). Thats 48 bucks…. Noe take 1 TB or transfer. With 6 people thats 6 TB. Bandwidth is expensive $0.30 per gig is conservative.

6TB = 6,144 GB

6,144 GB * $0.40 = $1,843.20

Yeah… wow… so about 2 grand a month for hosting 8 people if you don’t oversell. Not happening ;-)

I guarantee that if you used all 20GB and 1 terrabyte dreamhost would drop your account. It is a marketing ploy. They don’t expect anyone to use it all. Thats why if you read their TOS it says they can terminate your contract at any time.

dreamhost is great - I use hostgator. good to hear your moving to godaddy as well - I use it (i personally think its the best domain service)

I am sure that Dreamhost oversells because they assume that people will not use 20Gb of storage and 1Tb a month of bandwidth. That being said, hardly anybody pushes that much data so they can afford to promise that without much worry. They are promising more than they can handle based on the fact that 99% of their customers will never use it and the model seems to be working quite well I am sure that there are a few people who transfer close to a 1Tb a month, but they’re negated by the thousands that pay and transfer 100Mb-1Gb a month while using 20Mb of storage.

I agree with #10 ml … I was about to switch to dreamhost but upon further investigation I found out that they have an F with the Better Business Bureau. Combined with so many other horror stories (backup restoration from 3 days prior, frequent db/email/router crashes), I’m staying away.

Good luck with it, though. You’re going to need all the bandwidth they offer, what with Lightbox and all. ;)

anyone out there can recommend a solid alternative to Dreamhost then?

Samuel, try www.hostingplex.com - I’ve been with them for the past 3 years with not a single problem. They have an office, they have a 1-800 # where you can reach them during business hours, and they have on-line chat that’s open until late (EST). Solid company.

That said, I am both with dreamhost (non-critical personal blog for just ~8$/year :) and them, where I host my company’s domain + a couple of other sites.

Hope that helps.

I’ve been with DreamHost for 4 years now (remember that Dreamhost started in 1997, and is older than all these silly hosts you talk about) and I haven’t had any problems.

DreamHost rocks.

Check out TextDrive.com and Domainsite.com - both super reliable, less ads than Godaddy and competitive.

Your site seems to be slower than before. Is it due to the cheap hosting?
